Calendar preview – Shot-stopping Liz
Time to give you all a sneek peek at another artwork piece from the “Countdown for the Commons People” football season calendar featuring the “KevRam” logo from the “Fan Fayre” CD. (Don’t forget, you can get your CD by clicking on the links here on the site, the “Red Dog” limited edition is selling fast, so don’t miss out!)
Today, it’s the turn of Swansea City, who after flirting with the play-offs, remain in the thick of it with us next season. For those who don’t understand why the Queen is keeping goal – check the history books!

2 days in a box

Star Studios - Christie's home for two days
May 20th, apart from being my birthday, is the day I head back to the UK to begin rehearsals for the Christie 2009 Tour. Miki and I will celebrate our joint birthdays (hers was May 12th) with a trip out to a French restaurant before I go.
Individually, we will have all ran throught the proposed set, and the 20th sees us convene to make sure we can all still play them together! We’ll be holed up in a box for two days, essentially, though to be fair, one with all mod cons, and unlimited supplies of tea and coffee! A happy coincidence is that on the Thursday evening, my son Corey will be playing with his band Jilambis down the road in Wakefield, and I’ll be able to catch their set before getting some much needed kip ahead of an early morning flight via Amsterdam to Berlin. Incredibly, I’ve never seen him perform live properly, so I’m excited at the prospect of seeing them!

Staying “on song”

On stage with BC Sweet
I rarely perform shows in Spain these days, perhaps the occasional jam with friends in the beach bars and suchlike, but the fact is, running a few numbers solo is quite important when it comes to maintaining a certain standard. So every now and then, I accept an invitation to play a local show.
This time it was at Club Oasis, only 10 minutes drive from home. I spent a lot of time planning the set, not because I needed to, but because it’s good for me to stretch myself a little. With the Christie rehearsals for the European tour coming up, I performed around 10 Christie songs, plus a taster of the Sweet show I did in Berlin with the guys last week. Then I threw in 4 original songs, two of which “The Co-op Cow”, and “The Turre Stomp” received their premieres.
These solo shows are the only chance I really get to showcase the ever-growing canon of self-penned songs, and I’ll try some different ones the next time I take to a local stage. It affords a great opportunity to “road-test” them, as we have an obligation in the band(s) to perform the hits, and the chances to play new material are rare.
From a selfish point of view, the odd solo gig here and there is my chance to play just what I want, whether the audience want it or not!

Rivals and Pretenders
In the football world, rivalry plays a huge part in the enjoyment of the game. You can’t have Cowboys without Indians, you can’t have Sherlock Holmes without Professor Moriarty. You can’t have Derby County without Nottingham Forest. They are the “bad guys” we love to hate, and, if we’re honest, we hold them in a certain affection, because life would be a little poorer without them. Then, you have the pretenders, those that stand enviously just outside the clique, wanting in, but never being taken seriously. I can’t say for sure who that is in Sherlock’s case, but in Derby and Forest’s case, it’s Leicester City. If there’s one thing that will unite Rams and Red Dogs, it’s the Crisp-munching Foxes.
To illustrate this state of affairs, my partner Miki, the international French artist, has produced a piece of art, as part of her new project, “The Countdown for the Commons People” calendar, which takes the artwork from my “Fan fayre” CD and creates a whole series featuring next season’s championship teams all battling the “Ram” . The calendar runs from August to August, so it dovetails neatly into the football season, and it will be available in a strictly limited edition of just 125 copies, to celebrate the club’s founding in 1884. For now, check out the Leicester month!

Berlin bound? -well, nearly Poland!

A weekend of near-normality for me, as I traded my Football-related gig for a regular one, this time flying to Berlin for a show with BC SWEET. The flight was at a fairly civilised time, but even so, the fact that I had to fly from Alicante meant I still had to get up around 6.30 a.m.
I was met in Berlin by my driver Stefan, and we then headed from Tegel airport to another Berlin airport, Schonenfeld, where we would rendezvous with the other guys in the band, who had flown in from Luton, UK. The stock answer when you ask any of the promoters staff how long the drive will be is always “about an hour” but it was the wrong side of two when we finally arrived in a town just 10 kilometers from the Polish border.
The show took place in a large sports centre only minutes from the hotel, which was handy. We were part of a multiple bill that featured othere stars of the 70’s including the Bay City Rollers, Ohio Express and the Rubettes. We’d pulled the 11 p.m. slot, so I managed to grab a couple of hours sleep before the show.
The gig went well – the German audiences for these kind of gigs know how to party – and by the time we’d done, changed etc, there was little time for me to get any rest – I had to be up at 3.30 a.m. for Stefan to drive me back to Berlin tegel for my 7 a.m. flight. I don’t sleep well on planes, but I was so exhausted, I drifted in and out of an uneasy sleep as we crossed the Alps and headed south. The prospect of a two and a half hour drive home from Alicante didn’t fill me with glee either, but the prospect of a smiling Miki and a warm bed prompted me to drown myself in coffee and hit the road!
Another one down, next up, in direct contrast, a solo gig five minutes from our house!

Countdown for the Commons People
With the CD safely launched and out there in the public domain, Miki and I have turned our attention to a new, but not entirely unrelated project;
The “Countdown for the Commons People” calendar 2009/10
- which innovatively spans the year August to the following July in order to highlight the new Football season. The running thread through the calendar will be the “KevRam” from the CD artwork, and each month will feature the Ram facing a different Championship opponent, in humorous fashion. All the artwork has been designed by Miki, my partner, who is also a renowned international French artist.(with a little help from me!)
As a nod to the celebrations this year for The Rams, the calendar will be strictly limited to 125 copies, and will be available in 2 different formats, A3 and slimline. (pictured below)
A handy way to keep your appointments in the pub, and record our wins as we march on through the new season? UTR!
